After Maya Angelou’s “And Still I Rise”

• An acorn under the ground cracks open. A plant begins to grow upward and its roots spread out.

You can say mean words to me but I will still rise.

• The tree sapling is pulled from the ground, but is still alive.

You can hurt me, squash me like a fly.

• The sapling grows back but is stomped down by a boot.

But I will still rise.

• The sapling grows back and becomes a tree.

You can hate me for an eternity, I wouldn’t care.

• A contractor is looking at blueprints for a fence. A child is swinging from the tree.

Because I will rise, I will try harder.

• A bulldozer pulls up, protesters are blocking the path to the tree.

And I will be taller than you.
