During my time in the Digital Learning and Leading Program, I had the opportunity to think about an opportunity to create innovative and disruptive change to my organization. Since my environment has an undersupply of technological resources and a strong need for academic support, I decided to create a project called "Redefining Rigor." With this project, I plan to implement the use of ePortfolios to narrow the gap of academic achievement and technology use of students in my classroom.
I first began by writing a proposal letter to my school leaders to introduce my thoughts, ideas and brief benefits of accepting this project into the school culture of learning and way of teaching. With the need to help students with limited online access during the COVID-19 pandemic, I found that this could not have come at a better time. Allowing students to understand and utilize technology to enhance their learning is a crucial step to gaining the help needed to become more well rounded learners.
Once I explained the idea to my school community, I began researching text in order to show that my project is not only relevant, but it possesses benefits backed by academic research. With my literature review, I found valid and research based information to further enhance the knowledge base needed in order to undergo such a big project.
The next step is a paramount piece as an educator - planning! I created an Implementation Plan in order to guide my steps in ensuring my proactive approach to starting and following through with "Redefining Rigor." As time progresses, the plan will most certainly change. Especially as I find out more about what the future may bring during this time of "stay at home" and social distancing orders. However, planning plays a crucial role in the success of this project.
All in all, I am excited about my project, "Redefining Rigor." There may be resistance, but there may also be growth beyond expectation. This is why my motivational video points out the parallel of the learning we want students to experience and how an ePortfolio can strengthen student learning. As I continue to learn and experience the process, I plan to grow with my students, and the learning community as well in order to confirm that although disruptive, technology is a worthwhile tool for much needed educational change in this school community.
