The Chimneys mark the site of Robert Stafford's Sea Island Cotton plantation.
This painting is a rendering of the structures that the enslaved peoples would have lived in until the end of the Civil War.
All that remains of the original plantation are 24 chimneys from Robert Stafford's slave quarters. Experts at the park believe that after the Civil War, the recently emancipated freedmen were allowed to dismantle and move the wood from the structures as they were forced to leave Stafford's land.
