Dungeness was first built as a hunting lodge by James Oglethorpe. After the Revolutionary War, the land passed to Nathanael Greene, who died and left it to his widow Catherine. She and her second husband, Phineas Miller, built the first mansion in 1799. It was purchased by Thomas Carnegie in the 1880s who began building a new mansion on the site. Dungeness was destroyed by fire in 1959 and all that remains is ruins of the house. Here you can see the current building after the fire in 1959.
