In Grades K-2, students begin to collect and organize simple data. They make sense of data, create simple graphs and other visualizations, look for patterns, and draw conclusions.

Grade 1 Science: Light and Shadows

Students explore how light creates shadows.

They collect data
They use models and simulations to generate data
They refine their data when new attributes arise
They look at their data to come up with conjectures

Grade 1 Mathematics: Money Machines

Students use a machine metaphor to transform various amounts of coins, connecting dimes and pennies to tens and ones place values.

Students record data in a table, in the form of an input/output table.
Students use the data from the table to seek patterns and determine a rule for the table.

Grade 2 Mathematics: Measuring and Graphing

Students measure their heights and create graphs to analyze the heights of all students in their class.

Students collect data on their height
They manually graph data
They compare two histograms of the data
There exists the opportunity to use technology to create the histograms

Grade 2 Science: The Effects of Wind and Water Movement on Earth's Landscape

Students investigate how blowing wind and flowing water can move earth materials and change the shape of landforms.

Students create physical models of hills using a variety of media, collect data from experiments, and make conjectures and predictions based on the data.
