In grades K-2, students create simple algorithms. These algorithms may include simple loops or repeats (such as "perform this step 5 times"). They can test these algorithms by performing the steps (or acting them out), and fix any steps that don't work.

Grade 1 Science: Light and Shadow

Students explore how light creates shadows.

• Students use light to send signals
• They translate the light signals to icons that denote directions for movement

Grade 1 Mathematics: Money Machines

Students use a machine metaphor to transform various amounts of coins, connecting dimes and pennies to tens and ones place values.

• The machine metaphor allows for linking more than one machine together to produce an algorithm.
• Students can work through their algorithms using actual coins or other manipulatives.
