The History of the California Highway Patrol

The California Highway Patrol was created in 1929 to provide uniform traffic law enforcement throughout the state. Assuring the safe, convenient and efficient transportation of people and goods on our highway system. In 1995, the California State Police (CSP) was absorbed by the CHP. The CHP mandate had now truly expanded. They now had to ensure the safety of the whole state of California, one of the biggest states of the USA. After this merge, the ''California Highway Patrol'' as we know it today was officially born. The CHP quickly expanded over the years.

The Mission of the California Highway Patrol

''The mission of the California Highway Patrol is to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security.''

• Safety : Preventing collisions, enforcing traffic laws, and promoting roadway safety. 

• Service : Assisting motorists, supporting local law enforcement, and responding to emergencies. 

• Security : Protecting the people, property, and infrastructure of California, including critical transportation systems. 

The California Highway Patrol Jurisdiction

The California Highway Patrol’s jurisdiction is statewide, we have full authority anywhere in California, but our primary responsibility is:

• State highways and freeways;

• Unincorporated areas; 

• State facilities & property; 

• Commercial vehicle enforcement; 

• Specialized duties.
