Specializing in both private woodwind lessons and group instruction, I focus on the individual needs and goals of each student to ensure personalized learning experiences.
With extensive experience teaching flute, saxophone, and clarinet to students with special educational needs, I also offer specialized woodwind sessions tailored for those who may not thrive with traditional teaching methods. My inclusive approach ensures every student can access high-quality music lessons regardless of their learning requirements. I have developed adaptive teaching techniques including visual learning aids, sensory-friendly approaches, modified instruments, and flexible pacing to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities.
Teaching Experience in York
Drawing from seven years of professional woodwind teaching experience, I have delivered flute lessons, saxophone lessons, and clarinet lessons across diverse settings including private tuition, county music hubs, retirement comunities and schools throughout York. This broad experience enables me to adapt my teaching methods to suit various learning environments and student needs.
Woodwind Ensembles and Performance Opportunities
Beyond individual flute, saxophone, and clarinet instruction, I direct multiple woodwind ensembles including the popular Crescendo Saxophone Choir, providing students with valuable group performance experience and musical collaboration opportunities.
Musical Background
My diverse musical career encompasses performance, teaching, event management, and music technology. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Music and am currently pursuing postgraduate research into music and parkinsons. My specialist qualifications include Grade 8 certifications in Flute, Clarinet, and Saxophone, Grade 5 Piano, and a Diploma in Music Theory. As an active performer, my credits include collaborations with Subjude, The Hallé Orchestra, Intimate Winds Quartet, various pit orchestras, and numerous other musical projects, bringing real-world professional flute, saxophone, and clarinet experience to my teaching practice.

Piano, Composition and Theory Teacher York
My priorites as a teacher are applying knowledge to individual practise. This means the student is at the heart of the lesson. I pride myself on communicating ideas in music that help students get what they want out of their learning. This could be learning a particular style of music, graded examinations, nailing a specific technique or getting confidence in reading music, theory or compostional techniques. The choice is up to the student. By having a expectation free learning experience, students learn to use techniques to help them explore their instrument outside of lesson time and at their own pace. Music is about discovery, and this is not a one size fits all system, just come along passionate about learning a new skill. By thinking about music liberally anyone can get something out of the lessons, regardless of ability, age, disabilty or experience. Music is for everyone.
Teaching Experience.
I teach Music Theory and Compostion to undergraduate students in York, developing a vocabulary that suits their own musical identity, whilst adding different skills and knowkedge to their own musical skillset. I have also taught piano to musical theatre students in Norwich to help them increase their musical knowledge when reading script scores and practise pieces they can sing to in preperation for auditions. These skills are important to be a well rounded theatre practitioner.
Ensembles and Performance Opportunities
Through Crescendo, there are oppitunities to perform in small groups. This is an important and unique feature of our teaching ethos, as it is one thing to know how to play, but more importantly, how to play with other people. This is a great chance to meet other musicians and expand musical knowledge of other instruments. The oppitunities will be posted throughtout the year and could feature music from musicals, films, games, and popular songs.
Musical Background
My background is rooted in theatre and have composed music for plays as well as being a Director of Operations for Inkwell Producations from 2017-2020. I have also performed as a musican in pit bands for 9 years. I achieved my DipABRSM in piano performance in 2017 and play guitar to a Grade 8 standard. I also play bass guitar, clarinet and flute in ensembles. I play across a range of music both solo and in ensembles. This includes Classical, Jazz, Pop, Rock and Musical Theatre styles. My most recent performing work includes playing piano, bass and guitar for pop function band The Decades, and guitar, flute and clarinet in the orchestral/musical group Disney Band.
