The 2021 Chinese Read Aloud Challenge is closed. Please check back in June 2025 for the new challenge!
This event is to introduce the importance of reading out loud when learning Chinese. We hope to encourage all Chinese learners to become confident, expressive speakers!
In Speech and Debate class, students have been learning the five elements of effective vocal delivery:
Pitch, Articulation, Volume, Emphasis, Rate
Using vocal variety, students will read aloud two Chinese passages, one required and one selected. Parents will record a video of their child's read aloud performance and upload it through Google Forms. These videos will be featured on our school website.
Every student who submits a video will earn a participation prize. Additional awards will be given to students who receive special recognition for their read aloud performance.
Group A only needs to read one passage (see Read Aloud Script section below).
Groups B-D need to read two passages: one that is required for all students and one that is selected by the student (see Read Aloud Script section below).
Students will start by introducing their names, as well as the title(s) of the passage(s) that they will be reading.
Memorizing the script is highly encouraged but not required. If the student holds the script, please make sure his or her face can be fully seen on camera.
In addition to speaking with vocal variety, students should demonstrate good posture and eye contact with the camera. Hand gestures and movement are also allowed (but not required)!
Submit video entry through Google Forms to earn a prize: https://forms.gle/8kRyZy94usyghz888
Criteria for special recognition:
The student uses high and low pitch, loud and soft volume, fast and slow rate effectively to make the read aloud more interesting.
The student articulates every word clearly and emphasizes key words or phrases.
The student maintains good posture and eye contact.
