The five types of imagery
Though imagery contains the word "image," it does not only refer to descriptive language that appeals to the sense of sight. Imagery includes descriptive language that appeals to all of the human senses, including sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell. The five types of imagery are:
Visual imagery (sight)
Auditory imagery (hearing)
Olfactory imagery (smell)
Gustatory imagery (taste)
Tactile imagery (touch)
TIGHTENING TENSION BASICS
Tightening Tension refers to your ability to make your writing more suspenseful and engaging.
Key Point 1 - Tension takes time to build up so these sections are large and long.
Key Point 2 - Character must almost fail, this builds suspense.
Key Point 3 - You can appeal to the readers five senses using imagery to put the reader in your character's shoes, this makes your writing more suspenseful.
Key Point 4 - Plan first and write second. Plan out your pebble, rock and boulder.
what is a rock, pebble and boulder?
Pebble, Rock and Boulder refer to the problems/events you have in your story that make it more suspenseful.
Pebble - the small problem in your story which starts your sequence of events.
Rock - medium problem.
Boulder - the main tension scene and problem in your story.
