AI Art for Inspiration, Creativity, and Learning

MACUL Conference - Grand Rapids, MIThursday, March 14 10:00 AMAmway Grand - Governors

This interactive session will explore the educational potential of AI Art generators. It will share applications, creative ways to use AI art in learning, and hints/practical implementation strategies. Participants will engage in hands-on activities (using Adobe Firefly, Canva Text-to- Image, Bing Image Generator, or similar AI Art Generators.) Come and learn how AI-generated art can save time and unlock new creativity in your classroom.

📖 I also will be sharing on "Creating Meaningful Vocabulary in the Content Areas" with Apple Distinguished Educators in the Grand Gallery A at 10 am on Friday, as well as helping with other sessions. Here is more info on MACUL sessions with Apple.

To participate in the hands-on activities in this session, you will need to use an AI Art Generator - any one that you are familiar with and currently use will work. Here are some suggested FREE options:

ADOBE FIREFY - need an Adobe login, RECOMMENDED

COPILOT IMAGE CREATOR (formally Bing) - need Microsoft account login

CANVA MAGIC MEDIA - need Canva Educator Pro account

IDEOGRAM - only uses a Google or Apple Login to create an account

PERCHANCE - no login needed, basic, lower quality results, has ads

For my Apple Distinguished Educator ONE BEST THING project, I am documenting my experiments and ideas on ways to use AI Art in Learning. My focus will specifically be on ways the generated images can be used in the native Apple Applications like Keynote and iMovie and by apps on the iPad like Procreate or can be used to inspire learning and creativity in the classroom.

AI Art Generators:

Adobe Firefly - The free version will give you 25 "generative credits." Paid version is $4.99 US and gives 100 credits and is also included if you have a Creative Cloud or Adobe Express subscription. (See this Adobe support article for the full rundown of how generative credits work.")  You need an Adobe Account to use - the age requirement is 13 and above. Note (10/13/23): Adobe released Firefly 2, which has improved results and additional tools. Firefly can also be used with K-12 with school managed Adobe IDs, but it must be turned on by whoever administers the account.

Copilot Image Creator - This generator (formerly Bing) from Microsoft recently updated to DALL-E 3 and the image outcomes have improved. You need a Microsoft ID to login and use. You have a number of "boosts" to use for faster generation. Usage is for ages 13 and above (I believe - difficult to find clear guidelines).

Microsoft Designer - a slightly different set of tools from Bing Image Creator that uses templates to help you with your designs. Includes brand, album, and sticker creator tools, as well as AI to expand and remove backgrounds. One popular template creates a "Funko Pop" image of yourself. Another one creates a Lego MiniFigure. They also have a Sticker Creator Template that generates transparent stickers with a white border!

Ideogram.AI - specializes in creating logos and other text based images, although it often does NOT get the lettering correct on the first try! It has some nice styles and you can make graphics with/without text. Currently FREE (as of 2/28/24) allowing 25 credits a day. Terms of usage state it is for ages 13 and above. The only way to sign in for an account is using a Google or Apple login.

Canva Magic Media - The ability to generate images (not videos currently) is available in the free Educator version of Canva (as of 10/13/23). This account includes 500 Magic Media uses monthly. Usage is for "ages 13 and above, unless supervised." Canva also includes other AI tools for writing, presentations, and music.

Gemini Image FX - new/FREE from Google (as of 2/15/24), requires Google login to use (you may need to give permission to use Google AI Test Kitchen from Google Labs). Simple generator that converts prompts into drop down menus that can be easily changed. No clear info on age terms of use or limits on usage.

Leonardo.Ai - Image Generator - This app (as of 9/16/23) is a free download and is listed for ages 17 and up. It requires having a login account and does have in app purchases. The app works on works on credits to generate images. Currently, you receive 150 free credits per day which do not roll over. Most images require 20 credits and will make 4 versions of your prompt. Some of the more advanced styles do require a paid subscription. The quality of free images is lower than the paid version, which uses something they call "Alchemy" which greatly improves the outcome. (There also is an online version: https://leonardo.ai/)

Padlet - Padlet has added a "I Can't Draw" button to your posting options which uses AI to generate a picture based on your description. As of 10/13/23, Students under the age of 13 are listed to use "with guidance, supervision and consent of their parents, guardians and/or authorized school officials." Teachers should be able to share their padlet for students to use without logins. It is a bit of a "hack" to use this to make and download images since this is not the primary use for Padlet. Results are fairly good!

Pica AI Face Swap - uses AI to swap your face into one of their photos. Currently free and no login needed, ages 13 and above. They have other AI tools that require a login with 5 free generations a day (10/14/23).
