Keynote (free) - includes basic drawing tools and shapes, can trace photos and animate drawings

For Early Elementary:

Hello Crayons (free) - simple drawing tools, easy for young learners

Drawing Pad (paid) - realistic textured drawing tools, easy to use, many colors, includes stickers

KidPix (paid) - the classic program now on an iPad. Includes textured drawing tools, stickers and stamps, text, and special effects

For Older Students:

Tayasui Sketches Pro (paid) - many realistic drawing tools that can be customized, layers, text, shapes, knife. (NOTE: this is the app I use for most of my sketchnotes. It has many of the features that Procreate has, but simpler options so the learning curve is easier. I've used this app very successfully with middle school students.)

Procreate (paid) - this is the drawing app that the professionals use! Includes over a hundred realistic brushes, layers, text, and many more features that can be customized.
