Building a Classroom Community

Challenge Me

Building a Classroom Community feels like...

Children learn best when they feel they are part of a community in which everyone feels accepted and individuality is encouraged. Creating this kind of classroom community requires planning and practice. Below is one of the 5 elements of building that community.

Challenge Me: In education, student engagement refers to the degree of attention, curiosity, interest, optimism, and passion that students show when they are learning or being taught, which extends to the level of motivation they have to learn and progress in their education.

Universal Design for Learning

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how humans learn.

The UDL Guidelines below can be used by educators who want to implement the UDL framework in their learning community. Find out more about the UDL Framework on the CAST website.

These guidelines offer a set of concrete suggestions that can be applied to any discipline or domain to ensure that all learners can access and participate in meaningful, challenging learning opportunities.

Peruse the information found in the table. Though the whole of its content is relevant and useful, you may want to pay particular attention to the green column as it focuses on considerations that will help build a positive learning community in your class.
