Frequently Asked Questions

Sourcing + Using Images

Where can I get images that are approved for use?

Check out the resources at the top of this page!

Can I use images from free image sites, such as Pixabay or Unsplash?

We're still researching a final answer on this question, but the current answer is yes, as long as they are free for commercial use. You have to read the licensing carefully.

Can I use the images available in Canva Pro?

We're still researching this question, but the answer is "generally, yes."

Can I use the images available from PowerPoint's stock photos?

You can use the premium images and other creative content however you see fit, as long as it’s added within a Microsoft 365 app or SharePoint site. This includes exporting the Microsoft 365 file to another format. You can modify the picture, use it in the file forever, and use it anywhere in the world. Basically, do the same things that you would have done with Microsoft 365 documents in the past, but now you can include the stock images and other content from the Insert Pictures dialog. (Source)

For commercial customers, you can also sell PowerPoint presentations, Excel workbooks, or Word documents that include this content, just as you would have sold these files in the past.

Can I use images from the internet on social media?

You can use images on social media if they're available in public domain and/or properly licensed. You cannot use copyrighted work without permission from the copyright holder.

Can I use memes on social media?

No. Memes are protected by copyright law.

CDC used an image. Can I use it too?

It's not that easy. Just like any other image, you need to follow the requirements of the image source to acquire proper licensing. Read more here

Citing Images

When do I have to cite the images I use in PowerPoint presentations?

This depends on the requirements of the image and how it's being used.

Images that do not need to be cited will generally say "attribution not required" or similar language. It is, however, good practice to cite images used from outside sources in presentations. For example, if you include an image from Shutterstock in a PowerPoint that will be presented on behalf of the agency, include a citation, even if it is not required by the image's licensing agreement.

In short:

Don't forget! If you're presenting outside the agency, you must complete the green sheet process

How do I cite images in a PowerPoint?

If citation is needed, you can include the source:

Images from the PowerPoint stock feature do not need to be cited.

Do I need to cite images I use on social media?

No, unless it is an image that requires attribution for use.
