Can I use the images available from PowerPoint's stock photos?
You can use the premium images and other creative content however you see fit, as long as it’s added within a Microsoft 365 app or SharePoint site. This includes exporting the Microsoft 365 file to another format. You can modify the picture, use it in the file forever, and use it anywhere in the world. Basically, do the same things that you would have done with Microsoft 365 documents in the past, but now you can include the stock images and other content from the Insert Pictures dialog. (Source)
For commercial customers, you can also sell PowerPoint presentations, Excel workbooks, or Word documents that include this content, just as you would have sold these files in the past.
Can I use images from the internet on social media?
You can use images on social media if they're available in public domain and/or properly licensed. You cannot use copyrighted work without permission from the copyright holder.
Can I use memes on social media?
No. Memes are protected by copyright law.
Do I need to cite images I use on social media?
No, unless it is an image that requires attribution for use.
CDC used an image. Can I use it too?
It's not that easy. Just like any other image, you need to follow the requirements of the image source to acquire proper licensing. Read more here.
When and how do I cite images in a PowerPoint?
Images from the PowerPoint stock feature do not need to be cited. Other images that do not need to be cited will generally say "attribution not required" or similar language.
It is, however, good practice to cite images used from outside sources in presentations. For example, if you include an image from Shutterstock in a PowerPoint that will be presented on behalf of the agency, include a citation, even if it is not required by the image's licensing agreement.
In short:
Citation recommended but not required for presentations given within the agency, unless the image requires attribution as part of the licensing.
Citation required for presentations given outside of the agency, unless the image comes from the PowerPoint stock resource.
If citation is needed, you can include the source:
In small text below the image
Include with a list of resources at the end of the slideshow
Include in the speaker notes for the slides where the image appears
Don't forget! If you're presenting outside the agency, you must complete the green sheet process.
