What is a School Counselor and how do they support students and schools?

 The mission of Ms. Kirk’s Comprehensive Counseling Program is "to maximize the full potential of every student in a collaborative partnership with the school community." 

Our vision is that "our students are innovative learners. They graduate and become good citizens who are prepared to be engaged members of the community. They realize their potential and strive to maximize their growth as responsible leaders and lifelong learners. Our students use acts of kindness to uplift our world and aim to exhibit cooperation, awesome attitude, respect, excellence, and self-control at all times. Our school seeks to maximize the highest academic achievements, supports social and emotional needs and career development potential in a collaborative partnership with school staff, parents and families, and community members to ensure long-term success of all students. Our students are equipped to be positive world-changers."

About Ms. Sarah Kirk

Ms. Sarah Kirk is a National Board Certified Counselor and the School Counselor Specialist at the Oklahoma State Department of Education. In this role she is creating and implementing a state-wide, ASCA aligned comprehensive school counseling framework. She was a School Counselor for eight years. As a school counselor leader, she advocates for comprehensive school counseling programs for every student to meet their social, emotional, academic, and career development needs. She advocates for the creation and implementation of programs and interventions that meet the needs of the whole child including innovative supports such as Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS); trauma-informed practices; yoga and mindfulness practices in school and restorative responses to behavior. 

Sarah received her Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development and Family Science and her Master of Science degree in Counseling from Oklahoma State University. She is pursuing her PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision at Capella University. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the American School Counselor Association. She considers herself a lifelong learner and takes advantage of professional development and advocacy opportunities as much as possible. In 2019, her School Counseling Program became a Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) through the American School Counselor Association. As Oklahoma's 2018 School Counselor of the Year and an ASCA 2019 National School Counselor of the Year Finalist, Sarah hopes to positively advocate for the profession specifically by working to provide equity and access of school counseling services for all students. 

In her free time, Sarah enjoys spending time with her friends and family, traveling, running, yoga, bike riding, reading, volunteering, and filling other people's buckets!
