Predicting is a reading techniques in which readers user information from a text, including titles, heading, pictures, and diagrams and their own personal experiences to anticipate what they are about to read. (Fries-Gaither, J.; 2011)
This reading technique requires that the readers must be focused on the text at hand, by constantly thinking ahead and refining, revising and verifying his or her predictions. (Fries-Gaither, J.; 2011).
As suggested by Allison Behne (2010), when applying this reading technique it will be useful to follow to follow three basic steps.
First, it is important to suggest the reader to look at the details in the selection.
Then, the reader should make an inference of what will happen next, based on the details and background knowledge.
Finally, the reader must go back and check to make sure if the prediction was correct.
