The set had two spiral staircases leading to a raised platform. There were two movable "trucks" that had changeable backgrounds and breaks to keep them in place.
In a thirty second scene change, we need to transform an empty space into a bar with two actors. The backdrop is a key part to setting the scene.
It is built using a bar image printed on fabric, stretched across a wooden frame and stapled into place. A thin shelf is at the base, giving more depth. Behind the backdrop, there are two corner pieces that allow the frame to set on a set of screws. This allows for a quick mounting and unmounting for scene changes.
The movable trucks need to be able to be moved to the front of the stage for multiple scenes and be stable enough to have multiple actors on them. Simply leaving them on caster wheels was not an option.
I found and sourced a type of braking mechanism that would push a foot down using a lever, and in doing so would lift the forward caster wheels off the ground in order to stabilize the platform.
There are additionally triangular braces on the back of the trucks to both help with braking and stabilize the upright wall. They are hinged to allow for movement and to be tucked against the side walls of the stage.
