Selection of oral presentation in COSMO2024 (ver. 240917)
0. The overall format of the conference program was determined with reference to past COSMO conferences, in particular COSMO2010.
1. The organizers (hereafter “we”) invited parallel session conveners for 8 topics.
2. We identified 393 registrants eligible for the selection of oral presentation, i.e. those who applied for oral presentation before the registration deadline and who completed the payment before the payment deadline. (Rigorously speaking, one of them did not meet the payment deadline but the delay was within time difference from JST.) All oral presenters (other than invited plenary speakers) were chosen from those eligible registrants and the conveners.
3. For short talks in the plenary session, a selection committee consisting of 7 among us selected 12 speakers.
4. We decided the number of session units (1 unit = 120 min) for each topic as follows so that the total length for each topic is roughly proportional to the number of applications for oral presentations.
Numerical, Statistical, CMB : 1 unit (= 120 min)
MG, LSS, GW : 2 units (= 2 x 120 min)
Inflation, DM : 3 units (= 3 x 120 min)
5. We asked the conveners to select speakers in their parallel sessions from the eligible registrants and themselves but excluding those selected for short plenary talks in 3 above. We also asked the conveners to make the program of the parallel sessions. In doing so, we asked the conveners to make it sure that the number of talks in each session unit (120 min) is between 6 and 8 inclusive. (There is an exception: the conveners of the Numerical Cosmology/AI session consider that the traditional long talk format doesn't work well with the diverse and rapidly evolving field and thus decided to have many short talks and a long discussion with everyone actively participating.)
6. After receiving the programs of all parallel sessions from the conveners, we assigned the each session unit to one of 15 parallel sessions in the overall conference program so that the number of available speakers is maximized, based on the registration information. We then sent an email with a tentative program to those whose abstracts were selected by the conveners for oral presentation to ask whether they are able to give their presentations in the talk slots specified in the tentative program. After receiving some feedback, we asked the conveners to make revisions as necessary. All changes were minor.
7. In response to a request from the steering committee, we decided to add five session units in Friday afternoon. In order to select the five topics to which we assign extra unit, by comparing the ratio [number of eligible applications in 2 above for each topic] / [number of session units for each topic decided in 4 above], we determined the order of priority as follows.
DM > Inflation > CMB > GW > Statistical
8. We asked the conveners of the five topics prioritized in 7 above to select additional speakers and make the revised program of the parallel sessions.
