Our world is full of mystery. From Scooby Doo to the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines flight 370, every turn it seems like there's another perplexing enigma. None of these can compare to the mystery that is the ocean. There’s “immortal” jellyfish, the Yonaguni monument, and the marine life that somehow survives on the bottom of the mysterious Mariana Trench. (Donvito, 2022). And that’s just what humans have been able to find; the Ocean is still 80-90% unexplored.(National Geographic). It’s something that has been enthralling to the human race ever since humans have been curious. The Mariana Trench is something that has all the qualities of a grand mystery. It’s deeper than Mount Everest is tall, only twelve people have dived to the bottom, and even though life shouldn't exist at the bottom; it thrives.

Trenches are the product of tectonic plates moving around. When tectonic plates meet one another and hit each other, something called subduction happens.(Britannica). Subduction is when the less dense plate slides beneath the more dense plate, creating a trench. The super deep trenches, like the Mariana Trench, are from when multiple tectonic plates converge. These trenches are incredibly deep, the Mariana Trench is almost seven miles! Because these trenches are so deep there is extremely high water pressure, freezing temperatures, and complete darkness.(Britannica). These alarming conditions make it extremely difficult for humans to explore the trench floor. It only adds to the mystery and allure when you realize that species live in these extraordinary harsh conditions. Small sea cucumbers called Holothurians, amphipods, and xenophyophores are the most common creatures, but since it’s so hard to explore there’s still tons of species we have not descovered yet.
