The Smallest City In America Is
Right Here In New Jersey
When you think of a city, places like New York and Los Angeles probably come to mind. Of course, there are smaller cities. New Jersey has Newark, Camden, Jersey City, Trenton and dozens more. While many are some of our largest municipalities, the “city” designation is actually dependent on form of government, not population. The exact definition varies by state but New Jersey has 5 types of local government – village, borough, town, township and city. Our smallest city is among the smallest in America. Tuckahoe (part of Upper Township), to the south, is connected to Corbin City via bridge. Estell Manor, north and west of the city, was once part of Weymouth Township, as was Corbin City.
Established in 1922, the current population sits at around 500. It is 8.9 square miles, 1.25 square miles of which are water. Corbin City was named after robber baron Austin Corbin. The railroad magnate had a dubious reputation but this city does not. Austin Corbin was known to be ruthless, greedy and a notorious nativist. Few alive today know why the town took on his namesake. Born in New Hampshire and operating out of New York City, he has few ties to the area. However, at least in the present day, Corbin City does not reflect Austin Corbin's beliefs at all. It is a safe, sleepy city with just a handful of businesses. Many call it a peaceful paradise. Perhaps one of the biggest perks of life in Corbin City (besides a close-knit community) is access to the river. On Main Street, you'll find a small beach on the Tuckahoe River with a boat ramp, gazebo and picnic tables. Another perk is the proximity to some of our biggest beaches. It's just minutes from the hustle and bustle of Ocean City and Sea Isle City, but offers unparalleled serenity.

WEST NILE VIRUS DEDTECTED
IN SAMPLES COLLECTED FROM HEAD OF RIVER ROAD
West Nile Virus Confirmed in Additional Mosquito Samples
Mosquito samples collected on August 15 from Head of the River Road in Corbin City and the intersection of West Faunce Landing Road and Sycamore Street in Absecon have been confirmed for West Nile virus.
County public health and mosquito control officials are conducting mosquito surveillance and implementing additional control measures.
West Nile virus was previously confirmed in mosquito samples collected in Northfield, Egg Harbor City and Absecon. There are no reported human cases of the virus at this time, according to county health officials.
West Nile virus is carried by infected mosquitoes and can be transmitted to birds, animals and humans. West Nile virus can cause serious illness, even death. Health officials encourage residents to reduce their risk and the spread of West Nile virus by reducing exposure to mosquitoes by following these tips:
* Use an insect repellent whenever going outdoors. Repellents are an important tool to assist people in protecting themselves from mosquito-borne diseases. The Centers for Disease Control recommends the use of products containing active ingredients that have been registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for use as repellents applied to skin and clothing and approved for efficacy and human safety when applied as directed. Be sure to follow product directions carefully and consult with your child’s doctor prior to using on children.
* Rid properties of mosquito breeding grounds by draining standing water.
Mosquitoes do not travel far from where they breed. Buckets, bird baths, flower pots and other containers can hold water and provide an ideal environment for mosquitoes. Be sure to empty these containers regularly.
* Clean clogged gutters; check and repair screen doors; cut high grass around yard
