The Sun was an English/Afrikaans newspaper founded by A. S Hayes and C. L Stewart published in Cape Town following the folding of The Clarion which left a gap in the market for Coloured newspapers. The paper presented 'conservative Coloured opinion' (Switzer 1979: 60). By 1936, Samuel Griffiths gained control of The Sun and used it as a platform for the Coloured African People's Organization and white United Party United Party. The writers of The Sun were so influential to their audience that the paper led to the 'establishment of the Cape Literary and Debating Society' (Couzens, 1976: 16).
