Working with Video

Video Resources

All video (including Youtube) must be transcribed and/or captioned to meet ADA standards.

Youtube has captioning available, but you will likely need to review it and clean it up, especially for acronyms, poor sounds quality, or speakers with accents.

6 Rules of Composition

10 best practices

  1. No lengthy introductions ... but do introduce your topic/concept briefly > just get to the story... First 15 seconds should establish goal of the video.
  2. Edit. Edit. Edit in video production.
  3. Use appropriate title cards, credits, & branding in your video shooting & production.
  4. Focus on solutions, stories, and sharing.
  5. Keep It Simple. Don't go overboard with effects or music.
  6. Editing can not make up for poor video - set up your videos, check lighting, and staging ahead of time. Arrange (or cleanup) backgrounds prior to recording. The same guidelines for good photography apply to video!
  7. Use an external mic, if audio is needed (or record audio separately & add it in during production)
  8. Consider your audience and their (often tiny) devices. Is the video you are creating appropriate to the age of your audience? How does it appear on a small screen?
  9. ACCESSIBILITY.
  10. Keep it as short as possible. Lectures, talks, etc. will all be longer. Can you break them up into bite sized parts?
