Erik Demaine and Martin Demaine 2014

This piece is a hand-blown glass hollow “head” containing a hand-folded piece of paper with concentric circular creases. Artistically, the piece represents humanity's dreams of a natural green environment. Mathematically, we are exploring how the glass form constrains and affects the natural folding of the paper along curved creases. — Erik Demaine and Martin Demaine

ガラスの中に収められた折紙は同心円状につけられた折り目パターンを繰り返した作品です。曲線に沿って折ることで、その曲線の曲率が上がり、結果として一周の回転角が360度を超えてしまいます。このフラストレーションによって馬の鞍型に変形し、ひらひらとしています。同心円折り目パターンの基本的なものはバウハウスにおけるJoseph Albersによる授業の中で作られたものが知られています。ErikとMartinは父子で数学×芸術のチームを組んで、吹きガラスや折紙を用いた作品作りに取り組みながら、科学分野では100以上の共著論文を書いています。— 舘知宏
