A measured mechanical plan is a scaled technical drawing detailing the layout and design of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. These drawings establish the spatial relationship between HVAC equipment and the building structure to define the requirements for air distribution and temperature control.
The mechanical plan identifies the precise placement of equipment and the layout of the ventilation network. It provides a scaled representation of the HVAC system components, often categorized within a series of Mechanical (M) plans. The documentation specifies the physical dimensions and locations necessary for the installation of the entire climate control infrastructure. In a mechanical plan:
HVAC Layout: Precise paths of supply, return, and exhaust ductwork, indicating sizes and routing.
Equipment Locations: Clearly marked positions for air handling units (AHUs), rooftop units (RTUs), condensers, furnaces, heat pumps, and boilers.
Components and Terminals: Specific locations for diffusers, heat registers, return-air grilles, dampers, and exhaust fans.
Control Points: Location of thermostats, sensors, and control panels.
Pipe Routes: Single-line layouts for refrigerant lines, condensate drains, and hydronic piping (hot/chilled water).
Dimensions: Accurate measurements for locating equipment, duct runs, and piping, particularly in crowded areas.
Symbols and Legends: A comprehensive legend defining all symbols, abbreviations, and line types (e.g., solid vs. dashed lines for supply vs. return).
Elevations/Heights: Mounting heights of equipment, bottom-of-duct (BOD) or bottom-of-pipe (BOP) elevations above the finished floor.
Schedules: Tables detailing equipment specifications, including model numbers, capacity (CFM, BTU/h), voltage, and manufacturer.
Airflow Rates: CFM (cubic feet per minute) notation at registers and main trunks.
Structural Context: Walls, doors, windows, and structural members (beams, columns) to show context.
Clash Detection: Indication of space available for routing in both horizontal and vertical planes to prevent conflicts with plumbing, electrical, or structural systems.
Access Points: Indication of ceiling access panels or space required for maintenance and repair.
Title Block: Project name, address, designer name, date, and drawing scale (typically 1:50 for layouts, 1:20 for plant rooms).
General Notes: Specifications regarding duct sealant, insulation types, testing procedures, and code compliance.
Revisions: A revision block listing any changes made after the initial issuance.
Sections: Cross-sections through complex or congested areas to show vertical clearance.
Riser Diagrams: A vertical view of the piping or ductwork system.
Electrical/Gas Connections: Locations of power supply for mechanical units.
