A building cross-section is a 2D vertical representation of a structure's internal construction and material layers. This technical drawing details the relationship between structural components from the foundation to the roof ridge, documenting ceiling heights, wall assemblies, and stairways.
The building cross-section identifies the vertical arrangement of structural systems and the composition of material layers. This vertical slice specifies the exact dimensions of internal components and the spatial connection between the various levels of the building. The documentation provides precise data on the thickness of assemblies and the vertical positioning of all structural members. In a building cross section:
Foundation: Footing width and depth, rebar placement, slab thickness, and waterproofing measures.
Walls: Stud size and spacing, exterior and interior sheathing, insulation, vapor barriers, exterior finishes (siding/brick), and anchor bolts.
Floors: Joist size and spacing, structural beams, subflooring, and finish flooring materials.
Roof: Rafter or truss size and spacing, roof pitch (slope), sheathing, underlayment, ventilation methods, and insulation.
Vertical Circulation: Stair stringers, tread/riser dimensions, and headroom clearance.
Finished Floor Levels (FFL): Elevations for each floor level.
Ceiling Heights: Clearances from floor to ceiling or floor-to-floor heights.
Window and Door Heights: Exact dimensions, header heights, and sill heights.
Exterior Features: Eave height, soffit details, parapet wall height, and roof ridge height.
Soil Level: Indication of ground level, finished grade, or foundation soil level.
Material Hatching (Poche): Using standard hatch patterns to distinguish between materials (e.g., concrete, wood, insulation).
Hidden Components: Elements located behind the cut plane (e.g., rear walls) should be drawn to show context.
Detail References: Callouts to larger scale details, such as a corner section or a roof-to-wall intersection.
Room Labels: Names and, if applicable, floor numbers for the rooms cut through.
Scale: Appropriate scale (often 1/4" : 1'-0" for full sections, or 1:100/1:50 metric).
Section Symbol: A clearly marked "A-A" or similar symbol on the floor plan indicating the location and direction of the cut.
For renovations, it is critical to distinguish between existing, new, and demolished elements using line weights or shading.
