FROM THE BIRTH OF FASCISM TO THE LIBERATION OF SAN PIERO A SIEVE: THE MEMORIES OF A VILLAGE
This exhibition has been desired and set up by the Comitato 10 Settembre, a spontaneous group of citizens that was formed in February 2024, as part of the Proloco of San Piero a Sieve to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of the village from Nazi-Fascism. It has the support and patronage of the Municipality of Scarperia and San Piero, the Regional Council of Tuscany and many local associations.
The exhibition, realized by volunteers, is about the historical period that goes from the Great War to the Second World War and the downfall of nazism and fascism, with the intent to briefly recall, thanks to pictures and documents, the events, and their protagonists, of our village.
To expand the local “micro-history”, various documents were consulted, many testimonies collected years ago were recovered and archives were visited, all without losing the general context.
The intent is certainly political, understood as a contribution to public life and social involvement, and the result is enriched by valuable contributions of many citizens.
Our hope is that this work will help us to delineate a more concrete view pictures of the events, the suffering, but also the determination to pursue certain ideals that brought many young people to participate in the Resistance movement. An adventure maybe bigger than them, that cost many lives but that has been, with its articulated network of relations and roles, fundamental for the epilogue of an era to rediscover, in order to avoid that it repeats itself.
Today the Italian Constitution guarantees freedom, equality and democracy. The exhibition - organized mainly for the younger generations, wants us to remember the sacrifice of those who fought and suffered to obtain these inalienable rights.
For a conscious present and future to have roots in memory.
