The Comitato 10 Settembre, established in February 2024 within the Proloco of San Piero a Sieve, thanks to the contribution of numerous citizens of the Municipality of Scarperia and San Piero and of the municipal administration, aims at cultivating and transmitting the history and memory of one of the darkest periods of our local contemporary history, a time frame that goes from 1914 to 1946, between the squadrism and the fascist regime, between the Liberation War and the subsequent Italian democratic rebirth.
Within the Mugello area, San Piero a Sieve proved to be an important hub of historical events, of influential figures in the regime, including Francesco Giunta, and of personalities who fought for Liberty under the banner of the anti-fascist struggle, including Giovanni Sitrialli, Pietro Romagnoli, Paolina Romagnoli, Luigi and Raffaello Lorenzi, Don Antonio Boschi, Mario Cesari, Aldo Fedi, Silvano Stefanacci and Domenico Trifirò.
The committee does not have the exclusive purpose of being an organising committee for the celebration of the 80th Anniversary of the Liberation from Nazi-Fascism of San Piero a Sieve, which took place on 10 September 1944, but rather that of constituting over time a group of citizens who, in keeping with their love for the history of our community so that the message of Freedom and Democracy may be transmitted to the younger generations, will work through cultural initiatives to enhance our historical heritage, through documentary and photographic recuperation activities and the testimonies of the last direct witnesses.
Always keeping in mind the historical context, the wealth of anecdotes and protagonists of significant events that represent the local response to what was happening at that time internationally, nationally and in Mugello itself. A micro-history that is anything but negligible, which it is everyone's duty to bring to public attention.
Above all, we would like to create an interest on the part of the younger generations, who sometimes, in their school studies, become aware of this portion of history, even quite recent, at the end of the various cycles of education and without the in-depth studies necessary for a full understanding of the different situations. In fact, we would like to address ourselves above all to the children and young people of our Comprehensive Institute of Scarperia and San Piero, in order to stimulate them in the creation of a common civic sense linked and anchored to the anti-fascist values on which our Republican Constitution is based.
