Backstory

(Inspired by Geist: The Sin Eaters, Slashers, and New World of Darkness, in general for character creation ideas, though putting my own spin on a few elements.)

Jack, and his friends were the victim of a slasher attack. While all were slain, Jack managed to luck out, and find himself approached by a Geist…a kind of ghost that wants nothing more than to experience life again, but can’t properly do that unless tethered to our world via a host. Geists seek those out on the verge of death, offering them a deal…they let them hitch a ride, and the host gets to keep living, albeit with a new symbiotic relationship.

The new arrangement comes with a number of gifts…or curses…depending on the viewpoint. Jack can see ghosts and communicate with the dead. The Geist wants to live…and if the host is dead, it can’t do that…so Jack’s very, very, very hard to kill, able to heal and shrug off a number of injuries, though not invincible.

The trauma of his attack, resurrection, and the discovery of his new found abilities left Jack changed, to say the least.

Eventually he began to aid the spirits pestering him…mundane things, helping them to find rest and peace…but it started to become clear not all of those seeking help passed on from natural causes or accidents.

Victims like Jack, like his friends…victims of monsters, human and inhuman. Jack made it his mission to help lay those tortured souls to rest…to make sure no one else would end up like him.
