For the Formstorming project we had to document 100 iterations of a letter that had a form of significance to us. I chose the letter C, as it is the first letter of my name. We had to use our environment around us to find the letterforms, ranging from a direct idea, an implied iteration, or one constructed.
At the start of the project I felt a bit overwhelmed as I now had to find 100 different Cs, I have never gone out and done something like that before. But after the first few letterforms found it became fairly easy and surprisingly fun to find forms of C.
It was a fairly big challenge as my first graphic design project, but I thought my final product came out amazing, using the colors of the letters found to create a design using visual hierarchy and shape.
For the second project of the semester we were given at random five nouns and had to form logo designs out of them. When we create one that can be expanded on we zone in on that one and create a final design. The logo had to be either a combination of type and graphics or it had to be seal based.
I had a great time while creating this design, I explored a lot of color schemes to use, eventually landing on this burnt orange and green complementing each other well. Shape and form manipulation was a big focus in my design as well, changing the angle of the design entirely or just affecting the scale from the skateboard pieces to the half circles.
I think my packaging worked very well for my logo, the paper color mixes well with the orange; the typeface fits the type in the logo too. I could have made the point size a bit smaller in the future but i think other than that the packaging came out great an worked for the message my logo expresses.
In the editorial design project we were instructed to research a famous person in history and create a small editorial booklet about their life or something they did that impacted the world. Within the booklet the images had to be changed so they are unique to the project and the typography had to work with the design to create a complete piece of work.
I had a great time working on this project, it allowed me to learn about creating spreads and manipulating photos to make them unique for the design. It also gave me a very in depth introduction of Adobe InDesign so I can be fluent in its software for future projects.
I think my design was very successful for the project itself, I was able to reach many levels of hierarchy in each spread and create powerful imagery with my photo manipulations. It was a challenging project but I pushed myself and made it the best I possibly could.
In the design challenge I had three choices for my topic: a poster representing an area of choice, a poster about a time in history, and a group of words made of objects that have word play.
I chose the travel poster and wanted to show Los Angeles. Since this project is much smaller and had less allotted time for it I was limited on what I could and wanted to do. My main goal was to represent different parts of Los Angeles ranging from Hollywood to Compton. I created a Hollywood sign, the stars on Hollywood Boulevard in downtown, palm trees, the famous LA River, and a sign representing Compton.
This design is definitely not as strong as my past works during the semester, I could not find a way to merge all the pieces together well or show a full representation of the area. I would definitely return to this project in the future as it does have potential for my final portfolio.
