In the logo project, we were given at random five nouns and had to form logo designs out of them. When we create one that can be expanded on we zone in on that one and create a final design. The logo had to be either a combination of type and graphics or it had to be seal based.
My brainstorming process is not straightforward and messy, so my interpretations start as unprofessional drawings.
I began trying to create ways to show interpretation, in this I tried making the skateboard the head of a rose and filling flower shape into the shape of a skateboard.
My five nouns in the beginning of this project were "Flowers, Pink Clouds, Linoleum, Love, and Skateboards". After creating draft logos for the nouns I came up with an idea thought can go further, a logo using the nouns " Flowers" and "Skateboards", making the idea of "FlowerBoards"
I began just merging the two words directly, making the wheels have petals, but as I continued in the design phase I began to think more abstractly. I wanted to somehow make the flower an actual part of the skateboard.
While brainstorming I came up with the idea of make the flower shape from all skateboard pieces, the center as the wheel and the petals being the actual boards.
I decided to only do half of the flower to make it look different and unique from anything else similar. I think only having half allows you to do more around the actual logo if it is printed on paper or on a shirt.
I continued with this idea and expanded with the use of black and white. I moved the typography part of the design to the outside to represent more petals. Adding wheels to the boards will create ore definition and unity for the entire design reiterating that they are skateboards.
Base Logo, Green and Yellow. Bold Sans Serif Typeface. the brightness of the yellow complements the dark green well adding an element of variety.
Flipped Design horizontally, kept the grayscale, and used a symmetrical sans serif typeface. I added a circle around the design as well to make a seal like design.
Similar to the base logo, I change the color scheme to much darker with a purple and brass contrast. I used the same typeface as the original but I added a shell to it to make a thicker very bold.
My Personal Favorite. I Flipped it horizontally and cut down the size of the boards. I think the green and orange work extremely well together, the grey adding the neutral base makes it even more complete. I use the am typeface as the original and made it in an arch shape to represent the other half of the circle.
After viewing my logos in the versioning stage I thought the green and orange version was my strongest. The colors work so well together and the typography complements the rest of the design; I think there is great variety in all of it making it a unified design.
For the color scheme I think the colors just work so well, the shades make the design seem organic and natural, I wanted to practice using shades and tones with my color and I felt as though it was a success.
The typography works great with the rest as well, The fun and interesting sans serif typeface relates well to the rest of the design. Adding the arch to the type creates a new level to the design, It feels more complete as the arch makes the circle shape of the wheel complete.
After finalizing the logo we had to create a letterhead, a business card, and an envelope heading. I found a typeface that works well and made the background color a tan shade that works very well with my logo colors.
