For the initial project this semester we were set to find, create, and imagine 100 different iterations of a letter that had a form of significance to us. I chose the letter C, as it is the first letter of my name. We had to use our environment around us to find the letterforms, ranging from a direct idea, an implied iteration, or one constructed.
My main goal of the first 20 letter forms was to have variety, I wanted to show a mix of implied letters with my handmade Cs and direct forms as well. C was overall easy to find as it is a bit of an organic shape and can be easily manipulated and seen in multiple ways, I was able to see curves in many objects that can represent this letter well, making a lot of these examples unique from each other.
For this set of photos I had a stronger idea of what to do, I became familiar to the process of looking deeper into my environment. I wanted to find a lot more abstract and indirect versions of C. This was still a bit tough at first but it became almost second nature after this. One problem in these is I feel as though I could have taken better quality picture for a few examples.
By now the search for different letterforms became very easy, i s able to see an arch in many more objects that can represent C. I also made more letters using items around me like paint and chain. Again I would try to take better photos for some of the Cs but I till think this set of photos was successful.
The last few letters were simple yet hard to find, I was able to look past the simplicity of objects and se the letter C but it became hard to find ones I have not recorded yet, I really had to look further and think more abstract to find the last 20. In the end I had all 100 and I thought it looked complete, knowing I have all 100 was relieving and I knew I can stat the next phase of Formstorming.
This is an exhaust pipe I saw on a recent hike, I noticed that the curve in the pipe resembled a C and thought it would work perfect for this project. I used my personal Canon camera on this trip so the photo came out beautiful. I think the uniqueness of it lets it stand out compared to the other 99.
This is the hook part of a clothes hanger, it is pretty simple and boring in my eyes, the cropping of the photo seems very tight as well, forcing the letterform to be justified all the way to the right. It just seems very unpleasing to me.
In the final stage of this project we had to use the grid we made for the collage and manipulate the photos to have an artistic value to it, like changing the scale or building hierarchy. The piece I moved forward with was based around visual hierarchy, I separated the cools, warms, and neutral colors and made a design that moves your eyes from the warm shades to the cools almost seamlessly.
I really enjoyed this project, it allowed me to go past my design comfort zone and se what my environment has to offer. before doing this project I never noticed ho many things around me contain pats that look like the letter C. I gained a better understanding of how to force my mind to look a the world abstractly and see past the simplicity we see on a daily basis.
