In the editorial design project we were instructed to research a famous person in history and create a small editorial booklet about their life or something they did that impacted the world. Within the booklet the images had to be changed so they are unique to the project and the typography had to work with the design to create a complete piece of work.
I began drawing the photos I collected onto paper to see how they fit into the design and what I can do around them to make a complete design.
In the design I wanted to use big shapes to fit captions and titles to add visual hierarchy.
This project was very open ended, allowing the designer to be free in their decisions in the design. In my project I chose Arnold Schwarzenegger but zoned into his bodybuilding career in the 1970s. I wanted to emulate the feeling of the 1970s while representing Arnold at the same time. I began drafting and drawing ideas first.
The transition from paper to computer was overall simple but I began seeing overall problems in my design inconsistencies between different parts, the padding between the type and boxes, and many other things. This design was probably the first project I have had that is at this size and I need to see how each page and part relates to each other.
This was one spread draft I had that needed a lot of editing. The body text is vert tight to the box around it, everything is separate pieces and not showing hierarchy, and the columns are not complete.
In this spread I had similar problems, each section is not relating to each other and not using the space around it efficiently. As I revised everything I found ways to fix these problems.
By this time we were wrapping up the project and finalizing everything. I did a lot of printing to see how the colors are treated on paper, if photos are aligned, and if the typography is working with everything around it. I needed to make sure everything looked perfect before my final print and assembly of the booklet.
One of my favorite parts of my covers is the two photos I have as the focus. I used the same treatment on both and make them the same exact height so when the book is opened the two images seamlessly merge together into one design.
