Anadyr @ 0km

Anadyr, the starting point for our run, is the most easterly town in Russia. It lies on the southern shore of the Anadyr River, which empties into the Bering Sea. Incorporated as a town in 1965, it is a port on the Northern Sea Route and has a meteorologic station and a fishery factory. Small amounts of lignite (brown coal) for local needs are mined nearby. Pop. (2006 est.) 11,193.

Anadyr is further East than Auckland, New Zealand, and further North that Reykjavik, Iceland. It is less than 180km South of the Arctic circle, 400km from the International date line, and 500km from US soil (St Lawrence Island). Yet it is 6,200km from Moscow. Little wonder that they refer to the rest of Russia as the mainland.

In winter, temperatures below -20C are common. The river and sea freeze over in winter & our run will take us North, across the bay on the Zimnik. Zimnik is a Russian expression for a road passable only during the winter when the rivers are frozen.

Anadyr is in the Anadyr Standard Time zone - GMT+12
