INTRODUCTION

As the EIC of Design and interim events co-editor for the 2025 Yearbook, I help students come up with ideas for what to cover.

Diversity in this aspect always comes first, we set goals to cover all grades evenly, all genders evenly, and all subjects evenly. Once they are done with their spread, they have to mark down what grades were covered in the spread to make sure that we cover anyone and everyone that is a part of our high school.

"Our Yearbook this year is names 'All Things Considered" for a reason. To consider everything in a student's daily life."

YEARBOOK

Another aspect would be that the 2025 Yearbook gained a record amount of coverage, including 68% of the whole student body more than three times in the book (pictured left). Knowing that we still have a supplement to do in the late spring, our coverage of students still has a large chance to increase.

One aspect of the diversity in the 2025 yearbook is covering the Washtenaw United Girls Club Hockey team (left side feature story), who were back to back state champions. They didn't have a designated sports spread, due to being an intramural sport.

Another aspect is covering international students who came to this country for a better life. From Russia, Venezuela, and Mexico, the students mentioned knew it was hard adjusting to the culture. For the Events team, it was another vital topic to cover with the recent changes politically.

BROADCAST

One of the new segments for the 24-25 season of SHS Today, was Equity Snapshot, showcasing the Diversity and Inclusion Specialist of Saline Area Schools, Mr. Ryan Kerr.

For each segment, he would talk about an issue that he would talk about for each segment. One of the episodes (embedded left) he talks about how DEI is defined in a high school environment.

This kind of story is vital to show that there is no bias for a certain side and showcasing issues related to this topic can always be solved in a respectable manner.

FINAL THOUGHTS

For a student wanting to be a journalist, covering these kinds of stories is always an important roll. No matter if it's a sports related issue or a social issue directly affecting students. Especially in yearbook, where almost every student reads a part of this book, it is important to try and not leave out anyone. Covering every freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, school staff, male, female, those who identify as a part of the LGBTQIA+ community, club officer, and club member should never be looked past.
