Last December, in response to the local government's new curriculum emphasizing hands-on skills, we trained the first group of 21 middle school teachers from 13 schools in Kenya to conduct computer classes using Scratch. The teachers highly praised the training and promised to start teaching Scratch upon returning to their schools.
Last week, we completed a follow-up survey and found that trained teachers had already begun Scratch instruction in ten schools. A total of 695 middle school students have entered the world of programming for the first time, attending one-hour coding classes each week. Using the school's tablets, students work in groups to complete hands-on exercises. The teachers, trained by our program, guide students in understanding different Scratch blocks, assign practice topics, and encourage students to collaborate, create, and present their projects.
This success has motivated us to continue teacher training. We plan to expand the scale of our program so that the seeds of coding can continue to grow and flourish across the African continent, giving every child a future in the digital world.
