I continue to occasionally make a few Forney freight cars. The designs are unique and have an ingenious quality to them that makes them interesting and fun to collect. I would like to keep them available to collectors who may be specifically looking for certain pieces. The cars are quite labor-intensive to build, and Forney's stamping dies are getting worn to the point of being a little sketchy to work with, so unlike the Glenn and CMT lines, I cannot make any significant numbers of these Forney cars.
While The Glenn and CMT tank cars use aluminum tubing for the tank, Forney "rolled his own" tanks from 24 gauge steel, one at a time, by hand, using multiple passes through a sheet metal roller. The ends are made in a hydraulic press and then soldered to the rolled tank. The Forney tank is 3" in diameter, the largest of any Standard Gauge tank car. The tank cars are 14" long.
The Forney gondola is a very satisfying piece of tinplate. 15" long, it has double-walled sides with stamped ribs on the outside and a smooth interior. The gondola has Forney's "dreadnaught" ends, ladders, and the classic Forney brake wheel assembly.
The 15" Forney boxcars are time-consuming to build, but I try to keep one or two on hand in case someone is looking for one. The "dreadnaught" ends and corrugated doors are Forney hallmarks.
Red Forney made a lot of flatcars, in many variations. The model I make is 15" long, with low sides, suitable for customizing with loads of your choice.
