The Monarch and The Turtle

"Be Nice Or Go Away" on a rainbow background was The Monarch's favourite death threat.

The Monarch

Cambridge Lunatic Society was originally founded many years ago by The Monarch, a mysterious yet fiercely friendly figure who made CLS out of the deep frustration that the supernatural creatures of this world were too busy arguing with each other rather than trying to save it. He was originally a were-butterfly, who was stolen by the fae and returned changed, and then got himself bitten by a vampire out of curiosity to see if it would do anything (which it surprisingly did!).

He was the person responsible for the construction of the UCH wards using a combination of vampiric necromancy and fae magic, and nobody has yet figured out to replicate that. He also laid down many of the conventions of Cambridge Lunatic Society. Unfortunately, he crossed the rainbow on the dark moon a little while back and the Society hasn't really recovered from the loss.

The Turtle

The Turtle is not really a turtle. It is a bizarre and frightening creature from the fae world in the approximate shape of a friendly-looking turtle, though its exact form can change week by week.

The Monarch bound The Turtle into the UCH wards using fae magic, and now he is gone it acts as an extension of what those wards were designed to do. It can magically stop fights getting so out of hand that they threaten the wards' integrity by rendering all participants unconscious into a horrible dream and forcing them to apologise to each other in order to wake up.

The Turtle likes to possess a poor hapless member of Cambridge Lunatic Society each week and force them to try to intervene in fights between society members using the official Cambridge Lunatic Society Turtle Flip Dispute Resolution Code before those fights get violent. Sometimes it works, but often it doesn't. Nonetheless, CLS members don't hold it against the current Turtle Custodian for trying (it's not their fault, they have to) and will often come get them if something is escalating to avoid The Turtle forcing the Turtle Custodian around too much.

We're all slightly scared of The Turtle.

The Turtle Custodian is an OC dispute arbitration, administration and conduct safety promotion role that will be assigned to a different member of Cambridge LARP Society each week. If you are the Turtle Custodian, the Turtle will be physrepped by a toy plush turtle, which can be your own or borrowed from the kit pile.

The Cambridge Lunatic Society Turtle Flip Dispute Resolution Code

Originally designed by The Monarch, the code is as follows:

  • The supernatural creature requesting (or being pressured into) a non-violent dispute resolution should flip The Turtle, in much the same manner as you would flip a coin, to see if they lose or win.

  • Vampires win on heads, because they like to bite necks.

  • Shifters win on tails, because many shifters have them.

  • Changelings should choose the winning outcome before they flip, because changelings as a group have never been able to commit to a standard outcome.

  • If you lose the flip, you have lost the argument, and should back down. If you win, the other person should back down. Failure to do this means other society members may look down on you, and you're on the hook for fixing any of the problems you cause by escalating the situation to violence.

In actuality the only actions that other Cambridge Lunatic Society members find particularly shameful are uncoercedly requesting your own flip and then ignoring your loss, or starting a fight in the UCH Panic Room where the wards are most vulnerable to damage. Things break when you're angry, it's fine, we'll fix it and get through somehow.

Now The Monarch is gone, The Turtle doesn't let the person it's possessing let go of it long enough to do these flips (it doesn't trust them), so coins of any type have come into use and most CLS members keep one around somewhere. The CLS group chat moderation bot also gets renamed by the Turtle Custodian each week after what The Turtle feels like as a force in their mind, and can be called upon to perform coin flips using the ?flip command.
