UofA27 instructor led sessions
The Emergency Medicine component of Connect Care has unique functionality that may not be familiar with. This document provides a summary of accessing and navigating this unique interface.
Trainees starting an Emergency Medicine rotation will use this document to orient themselves to specific ED functionality, including how to to find and assign patient, write notes, and place orders.
Logging in to an Emergency Medicine department will automatically apply the unique ED functionality.
Unlike other specialties you will login to the specific ED department, rather than the zone department.
Listed at the end of this document are all the Emergency Departments that are active in Connect Care
To help guide you through the information below please:

After logging in you will complete an additional step to Sign-In to your shift and identify your supervisor. Click the Sign-In button and enter the name of your supervising physician, then Accept.
It is possible to Sign In and pick your supervisor before that person is signed in to the Emerg Department.
If you do this and then assign yourself to patients your supervisor will not be assigned to those patients. You will have to let the person you selected as supervisor know that they must assign themselves to those patients.
The ED Track Board is how you find patients in the emergency room. Instead of using a Patient List, ED providers use the Track Board to access patients. You can see that the columns of the Track Board provide information about each patient, hovering over icons will show additional detail.
When you click on the name of one patient you can activate the side-by-side view by to show ED specific reports and functions. If the side-by-side view does not appear automatically then click the thin vertical green button on the right side of the screen.
The Seven ED functions that are shown in the sidebar are: Triage, Workup, Reports, My Note, Orders, Dispo, Write Handoff
Assign yourself to a patient by right clicking on the patient’s name and selecting Assign Me.
Clicking My Note, Orders, or Dispo in the side-by-side view will open the chart
Notice that Storyboard and Chart Review are available, the same as you would see for an inpatient or outpatient. The remaining tabs are the ED specific tools: Triage, Workup, My Note, Orders, and Dispo
This activity provides a quick view of information enter during the triage process, including assessments, vitals, Problem list, Allergies, etc.
The workup activity includes results, vitals, and the ED Course
The orders view is similar to admitted patients and should be familiar to you.
The Orders activity in ED has quick lists which allow for direct selection of Panels and individual Orders. Orders placed in this view will be fulfilled in the Emergency Department
Notice that the quick lists are grouped by Orders, Imaging, and Patient Care.
When logged in to a Connect Care ED Department and using the My Note activity your notes will automatically be categorized as ED Notes.
Clicking the My Note button will create a new blank note
Clicking the down arrow that appears just to the right will allow you to select a Simple or Complex Note template.
As you know Connect Care notes allow for the combination of written text and SmartLinks that pull information from the chart. SmartLinks are sometimes referred to as "dot phrases", smartlinks specific to the Emerg all start with ".ED"
Lab results can be added to the note by typing
Labs ordered & resulted ".EdLabs"
Lab results, abnormal only ".EdnAbnLabsOnly"
Radiology results can be added by typing
Radiology results ".EdRadiology"
Disposition is used to complete orders and documentation for patients being discharged from the ED.
As a Learner you can use Dispo tools to
Add outpatient orders,
Document follow up information,
Update patient instructions.
Note: Orders placed in the Dispo activity will be fulfilled after discharge, not in the Emerg.
When clicking Sign Out you will be prompted to assign your patients to another provider.
Patients can be reassigned individually or all at once
