2020 saw a law proposal in Alabama that would require men over 50 to undergo vasectomy. The prosed bill states the specific date is within a month after a man turns 50, or right after he had a third child, depending on which comes first.
The proposed bill, known as HB-238, was authored by Rep. Rolanda Hollis of the District of Birmingham. The law also requires men to pay for the vasectomy themselves. In the proposed bill, the sole reason is that there are currently no laws restricting men's reproductive rights.
According to Rep. Hollis, while HB-238 may seem ridiculous to many, people have to remember that there have always been proposed and passed laws on women's reproductive rights. Rep. Hollis notes that the bill aims to put a damper on the abortion ban passed last year. In addition, the bill sends the message that men should not dictate what women should do with their own bodies.
