We start all of our puppies on excellent potty habits so that your job as a new puppy parent can be a little easier. Let's face it, of all the wonderful things that we look forward to when getting a new puppy... accidents are not one of them! Unfortunately, they are bound to happen until your puppy learns where the facilities are located and how to ask to use them. Every home is different... some families choose potty pads, others have a turf, mulchy, or sandy potty area designed to protect the yard, while others just need the dog to go outside! Regardless of the method you hope to use, the puppy's job remains the same: hold it for a designated place! This concept is what we instill in our puppies from a very early age.
Puppies do not begin going outside until 6-7 weeks. We raise our puppies indoors to protect them from extreme temperatures, germs, parasites, and even predators! While they are too little to venture outdoors at 4-5 weeks, they are not too young to begin learning good potty habits as part of their socialization. Canines are naturally clean animals who do not want to soil their den area. While other breeders fill their puppy's pen with paper shreds or sawdust, this is a detrimental practice that makes puppies harder to train even if the bedding is regularly changed. Puppies who are allowed to go on their bedding become used to the smell of urine and feces from birth to adoption. Then they go home and are not bothered by having accidents in their crate or bed... They believe that you will clean it up and provide a new fresh pillow for next time. (See how this can be frustrating?) We provide a seperate potty space where puppies can begin using the potty area as soon as they can crawl off their blankets! This encouraged them to hold it, seek an appropriate place, and leave their living space to use the bathroom.
