Artivism is a portmanteau word combining art and activism, and is sometimes also referred to as Social Artivism. The artivist uses their artistic talents to fight and struggle against injustice and oppression—by any medium necessary. The artivist merges commitment to freedom and justice with the pen, the lens, the brush, the voice, the body, and the imagination. The artivist knows that to make an observation is to have an obligation. (Wikipedia - It's Bigger Than Hip Hop by M. K. Asante )
Let us introduce Wout De Ridder
In 1990, during his biology studies he starts taking photographs 'consciously' with a manual Pentax Spotmatic camera.
He is interested in nature photography, reports or simply images that strike him.
He does assignments for a number of student associations and exhibits several times in group exhibitions.
When he starts working for a traveling theater company, he still makes images of that way of life, and his photos and photomontages are also useful for the company's website.
He later decides to continue with that constant in his life, photography, starts training at Syntra Antwerp, CVO Leuven and the art academy in Turnhout, and also searches for techniques and visions that appeal to him, including analogue images on film.
Digital graphic works are added from photography.
Wout is working 'in residence' in the Cilab atelier, supporting on different projects, including the students from Mode Ursulinen.
In April/May 2025 you can see Wout's exhibition "Troubled Clothes" in Espirito Mundo, Brussels
Troubled Clothes is an allegorical photographic series about textiles and the problems associated with them, born from a collaboration with Cilab. The people depicted wear masks and headgear made from recycled or repurposed materials: textiles, paper, and plastic.
These are not literal illustrations, but artistic and intriguing images subtly woven into the fabric issue.
The first part, The Ways of Textile, explores the reality of modern slavery, the immense distances textiles travel, the mountains of packaging, the trap of fast fashion, the obsession with style, and our tendency to turn a blind eye to these issues.
The second part, Faces of Fashion, composed of self-portraits, explores similar themes: the question of textile recyclability, their transportation, overconsumption, large corporations that perpetuate waste, as well as the power and symbolism of clothing.
The third part, Dyed Fish, highlights the pollution generated by textile production, particularly the massive release of dyes into aquatic environments.

I've never had the chance to experience a place like this.
Every 30 minutes of hiking, you're seeing yet another stunning view. That's where we started this morning.Epic waterfalls, towering mountain ranges, shaky suspension bridges, you can't help but be filled with wonder and awe as you climb over 3000, 4000 and finally over 5600m high.
But to get to these majestic views, you spend most of your time looking down.
No, not down that way. Down this way.
Putting one foot in front of the other. Across rocky and muddy terrain.
And you can't help but notice. Trash. Tiny fragments of trash strewn around everywhere you go.
But this is not a story of sadness.
This is a story of hope, empowerment and transformation.
A story where one small idea can grow into a movement that can support an entire region. Maybe the entire world.
Ben.
The Unforgettable Brigade
Artivism is part of our mission. We have integrated it in our daily activities. We have been supporting different initiatives and projects. We collaborate with Junior Mthombeni, Wout De Ridder and the Unforgettable Brigade of Benjamin Von Wong.
