Long-Term Effects of One-to-One Chromebooks in the K-12 Classroom
What is the topic of your article?
I will look at and examine the long-term academic and developmental impacts on students having a Chromebook with them all day.
Where do you plan to submit (consider 2-3 options)
Educational Technology & Society - Requirements: Total word count of manuscript under 8000 words, excluding References and Appendices, with Abstract under 250 words. APA reference style, including in-text citation
The Journal of Research on Technology in Education - Requirements: Manuscripts between 4000 and 8000 words, with Abstract approximately 100 words
What is the connection to your innovation plan or initiative?
I do not have an innovation plan but this is something that I have discussed with others about the shift in education since 2020 with every student having a device and its impact that has already been shown in the classroom. According to the Texas School for the Deaf the average high school student spends 7 to 9 hours in front of a screen and this has led to an increase in mental health issues, academic decline, physical health problems, and weakened interpersonal skills(Texas School for the Deaf, 2024). Some research also suggests that there can be impacts on executive functioning, sensorimotor development, and academic outcomes(Muppalla et al., 2023).
How can this information help others?
Provide insight based on research to help guide in class instruction and classroom management. Offer strategies to leverage device effectiveness with instruction to lower detractions without eliminating the devices from the classroom. My audience would be teachers and administrators in the K-12 setting to guide instructions that can help improve student success.
Lessons learned or hoped to learn?
How to better improve student engagement in the classroom and better integration of technology. How can technology be used that is both effective and not a hindrance in the development of the student.
What digital resources will be included in your article? Briefly describe.
Online surveys for both educators and students to gauge the feeling of always having technology in the classroom.
Peer-reviewed journal articles that look at the cognitive and developmental implications prolonged use of screen time. These can give an insight into how prolonged device usage impacts student learning outcomes.
Educational data dashboards or analytics tools, like GoGuardian, to support analysis of Chromebook utilization over time.
