Weekly Teaching Tips Blog

For nine years I have edited and authored this weekly series of brief, practical tips for teaching. Starting as mailings to some Oakland University faculty, this series is now a popular blog with over 700 subscribers. In addition to writing these posts, I partner with contributors from OaklandU faculty, staff, and students, and educators from the POD Network. Diversity Challenge: 10-week common campus learning experience

For the second year, this online learning opportunity brought together 200 faculty and staff to dedicate an hour a week to learn about and reflect on a topic related to diversity and inclusion. It was a great instructional design project, ensuring the design was clear and accessible enough for learners of varying schedules and tech familiarity, and included the expertise of over a dozen diversity experts. Take a text-narrated tour of the Diversity Challenge.

In my work, I am constantly considering how to open access to learning opportunities using online asynchronous materials that are engaging and easy to follow. In 2019, I developed a fully asynchronous faculty orientation for faculty who could not attend on-campus events. I described my process in the 2020 Journal of Faculty Development article Creating New Faculty Orientation Online with Limited Time, Staff, and Resources, which was released when many institutions were rushing to create online orientations. This is one of six videos I used to introduce new faculty to a module in the orientation space. Watch Faculty Orientation Online video in YouTube.

To increase access through multiple modalities, I set out to create five-minute videos on on the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning YouTube Channel, which has more than 3,000 subscribers.
