Standard 8 - Collaborative Relationships – The competent teacher builds and maintains collaborative relationships to foster cognitive, linguistic, physical, and social and emotional development. This teacher works as a team member with professional colleagues, students, parents or guardians, and community members.
Description:
This is a mentoring program at Coolidge Middle School. Staff mentors the students to prepare them for academics and provide experiences outside of the school. Within the school, academics, social/emotional, and participation in extracurricular activities are the focus. Outside of school, community involvement, career exploration, and social activities are the focus. Each mentor has 5-7 students. Some of the relationships I have maintained once students have graduated. We want our students to be well-rounded and prepared for the future.
Connection:
Performance indicator 8L states, “The competent teacher initiates collaboration with others to create opportunities that enhance student learning.” The Coolidge Middle School staff has initiated a mentoring program to collaborate with students and families to provide experiences outside of the school that will increase student’s background information thus enhancing student learning.
Learned:
Building relationships makes a difference! I communicate with former students often. I must admit it seemed a little futile at the time, however now, I know it made a difference. As educators we do not always see our student’s growth in all areas. However, with the relationships I’ve built, my student usually comeback to say thank you.
Description:
Currently, I have the honor of serving on the South Holland School District’s Strategic Planning Committee 2024 – 2028. I’ve been attending meetings with parents, school board members, staff from other schools, community leaders, and administration to ensure our students have what they need while in school and are prepared for life beyond school. I’ve attached the cover of the last committee from 2019 – 2023.
Connection:
Knowledge indicator 8E states, “The competent teacher understands school- and work-based learning environments and the need for collaboration with all organizations (e.g., businesses, community agencies, nonprofit organizations) to enhance student learning.” The goal of this committee is to identify a pathway for our students to continue learning. Working with the variety of members ensures various perspectives and needs are addressed.
Learned:
I am a member of the Curriculum and Instruction subcommittee. I am learning how to make specific short-term goals, general goals that can help the entire district. Also, I’m learning how to include everyone’s opinion. It is so important that everyone is heard and feels valued.
