Description:
This is a figurative language lesson intended for all students to learn and participate. It was modified for a student to incorporate the use of an assistive technology device. This was an assignment for a class in which I demonstrated how to use the device and teach the class. My peers were the 8th grade English language arts students which included special education students with individualized education plans.
Connection:
Performance indicator 2O states, “The competent teacher designs learning experiences and utilizes assistive technology and digital tools to provide access to general curricular content to individuals with disabilities.” This PowerPoint lesson gave access to a nonverbal student with limited hand movement. The student can respond to questions and communicate with a partner using an assistive technology device.
Learned:
I learned that all students benefit when every student is able to participate during instruction in a classroom. Through the interactions students gain academic knowledge, social, and communication skills which are necessary to be a productive member of society. Also, that teachers must intentionally plan to ensure that every student can participate and assist one another.
Description:
This artifact is two-fold. I wrote an analysis of a trade book “The House on Mango Street”. Then, I was able to teach the novel. The novel is an easy read for my 8th grade English language arts class; however, there are vocabulary words that I taught in advance for clarity.
Connection:
Knowledge indicator 2H states, “The competent teacher understands the relationship among language acquisition (first and second), literacy development, and acquisition of academic content and skills. The novel uses culturally specific language in dialogue that some students may be unfamiliar. Teaching these vocabulary word in advance will aid in comprehension of themes.
Learned:
I learned when students are explicitly taught vocabulary words in advance of reading, they can make connections to increase comprehension while reading. This will increase their acquisition of academic content.
