Standard 1 - Teaching Diverse Students – The competent teacher understands the diverse characteristics and abilities of each student and how individuals develop and learn within the context of their social, economic, cultural, linguistic, and academic experiences. The teacher uses these experiences to create instructional opportunities that maximize student learning.
Description:
This is a midterm paper I wrote for an Equity and Justice class at Trinity Christian College. In this paper, I analyze who I am based on my race, gender, environment, and family history. Then, since I am aware of who I am and why I respond the way I do, I realize that everyone responds differently based on who they are and their experiences. My goal is to establish an environment that celebrates diversity as a norm.
Connection:
Knowledge indicator 1F states, “the competent teacher understands his or her personal perspectives and biases and their effect on one’s teaching.” This assignment caused me to question my world view and belief system. I am aware of who I am and why I am this way. Using this information in the classroom, I am able to flexible to change direction to fit the needs of my students.
Learned:
Upon reflection, I have a deeper understanding of myself. I can see how my thoughts and beliefs may impact children. The analysis confirmed what I already knew; that I am special because of who I am. Since our children is our most precious resource, we must ensure that every child knows and feels the same way about themselves. Accepting differences is paramount in the success of our communities. As educators it is our responsibility to ensure this occurs.
Description:
This is a copy of the reading interest survey that I used at the beginning of the school year for student teaching. My student teaching experience was in an 8th grade English language arts classroom. The purpose of the survey is to gain insight as to the students likes, dislikes, and habits of reading. I also included a survey for the parents to gain an understand of their desires for their child.
Connection:
Performance indicator 1H states, “The competent teacher analyzes and uses student information to design instruction that meets the diverse needs of students and leads to ongoing growth and achievement.” This survey provides the teacher with insight on what types of books or articles the students enjoys so instruction can include subjects of interest to keep students engaged. When students are engaged then they learn more. Also, when teachers show common interest in their students and parents desires then it is beneficial to all because learning occurs and relationships are strengthened.
Learned:
I’ve learned that it is important to begin teaching based on student’s and parent’s interest. Then, everyone is willing to go a step further because of trust and a willingness to try. I believe, once a student is willing to try, the outcome is immeasurable. Dreams are attained because there are no limits.
