Trail worthy bike: $400-600 (used)
The bike is by far the largest investment when getting into mountain biking. We mention "trail worthy" because many of the bikes found at big box stores are not built for trail use. They may be marketed as "trail" or "mountain" bikes , but they will not stand up to the abuse that your child will put them through. You will regularly having parts fixed or replaced which cost time and money. As a first real mountain bike, we recommend finding a good preowned hardtail mountain bike from and online marketplace. Brand names such as Trek, Specialized, Giant, Scott, BMC, Fuji, Canyon, Marin, GT, among other should work well for our trails. Contact us if you need recommendations or need help finding a bike. (We have a small fleet of loaners available to use if needed until a bike can be found)
Helmet: $50+
Safety is forefront of what we do, therefore any time your child has their leg over the bike, a helmet is required to be worn and buckled. The type of helmet isn't as important as having one that fits properly. We can help determine that. Our recommendation is to purchase a helmet that covers the back or the head and we like helmet with MIPS (Multi-directional impact protection system) Helmets with mips systems rotate slightly in the case on an impact which is said to reduce brain injury compared to impact to helmets with no such system.
Jersey: $55-65 (required only if racing)
If your child is planning on racing, they will need a team jersey. If they are not, the team jersey is optional.
