THE BEGINNING:
The Cherokee Bluff Mountain Bike Team was founded in 2020. What began with just eight middle and high school students quickly grew into a thriving community of more than 25 athletes supported by seven dedicated volunteer coaches.
We operate first and foremost as a youth development organization, not a competitive sports team. Our mission is to help kids get outside, step away from screens, and challenge themselves in a safe, supportive, and fun environment.
WE ARE GEORGIA CYCLING
GEORGIA CYCLING ASSOCIATION:
Our team is part of the Georgia Cycling Association’s Team MTB program. Founded in 2013, Georgia Cycling now includes more than 80 school‑based and composite teams across the state. In 2023, over 1,100 student‑athletes participated in league programming.
The Georgia Cycling Association is an independent organization. While they work closely with the Georgia High School Association, they are not governed by it. This independence allows Georgia Cycling to set its own rules and bylaws, manage its own schedules and venues, and establish coach‑training requirements that best support youth development. Because of this structure, teams like ours are recognized as school clubs, not sanctioned sports.
The Georgia Cycling Association enters its 13th season in 2026. To learn more about Georgia Cycling and the programs they offer, visit their website at:
WHAT WE DO:
Because we are a youth development organization rather than a traditional sports team, we operate very differently from most athletic programs. We do not hold tryouts, and we do not have benchwarmers—every student who signs up participates. We encourage riders to push themselves and step outside their comfort zones, but we never force anyone to do something they are not ready for. We call this approach “challenge by choice.”
Our definition of success is not based on race results. Success means having fun, staying safe, overcoming challenges, improving skills, trying new things, refusing to give up, learning about oneself, and finishing the race.
Through mountain biking, we teach healthy lifestyle habits such as regular exercise, proper nutrition, and hydration. We also help students develop mental toughness, goal‑setting skills, basic bike maintenance knowledge, and the confidence to take on difficult tasks.
Mountain biking is demanding, and those who participate are every bit as athletic as students in traditional ball sports. In fact, many kids who may not “succeed” by conventional sports standards often thrive in mountain biking.
PRACTICE:
For the 2026 season, practices begin on July 7th. Our weekly schedule is Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00–8:00 p.m. and Sundays from 2:30–5:00 p.m.
We are fortunate to train on 6.5 miles of private, purpose‑built trail at the Fox Raceface Trail System, located at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia. This trail network—situated in the grassy field and wooded area to the right of the motorsports track—is home to our team as well as several other local programs.
We practice alongside these neighboring teams, using that shared environment to enhance the experience for every rider. Students are placed into groups based on riding ability, and each group includes kids from multiple schools. This ensures riders feel comfortable—neither outpaced nor held back—and strengthens the community aspect of our program. Many of the closest friendships in Georgia Cycling are formed among students who would never have met if not for practicing together.
Please note: The Fox Raceface Trail System is not open to the public. Riders are not permitted on the trails outside of scheduled practices and special events.
