This game is an interactive + puzzle side scroller game which was a combined assignment from our Art and Tech courses.
Theme
This game had to be a interactive game with a puzzle to solve. That means, there should be some story behind or at least a guide to why it should be solving the puzzle.
Most of my friends who were doing this chose to do an escape room theme. However, I wanted to make a cute little story about it where a girl who happens to be one of the best bakers in the kingdom, was chosen to bake a cake for the Queen's birthday. She has to go on a little journey to gather the finest ingredients that she needs to bake the cake.
Process Thinking
I first, had to plan out the player's story, design, functions and puzzles before I could start on anything. Planning and imagining how it would turn out was the easy part. The hard part was making everything and combining it together to make our masterpiece.
Drawing the game assets such as the actors, NPC's, props, interactable objects and background took the longest time. It was essential to me that I completed them first or else testing my program would be a bit difficult. Although this part took the longest, I realized I had fun drawing them and making something of my own creation. Through this, I had also realized that drawing background wasn't my forte. A large sized image which was drawn using pixel was really difficult but I manage to put something presentable in the game.
After drawing my assets, it was time to program my ideas. It was super difficult as I had been only making games that had some sort of fighting gameplay involved. This required lots of game behaviors to make the game work. Although it was a tough journey, I managed to get all my game mechanics and functions working properly to the way I wanted it to. All the ideas I had planned to add were successfully implemented into the game. The only thing I was concerned with was the puzzle part. I was worried that it wouldn't be much of a challenge as that was what puzzles were supposed to be.
Conclusion
From the start of the semester till the end, I am happy that I have improved in both my art skills as well as my tech programming skills. This last project of the semester is a proof of my progress since I started.
However, I don't plan on stopping my growth there. I hope to expand my knowlegde and skillsets even more from now on.
